All about Extreme Bloating
Extreme bloating is caused by too much water accumulating in the body. Water is both inside the cells and outside of the cells. Bloating is fluid retention. It gives you a look of puffiness plus it makes you feel overly large and uncomfortable.
Bloating can have many causes. It can be because of a medical problem or disease or it can be because of what you eat. Many women experience bloating every month as a part of their menstrual cycle. This extra fluid can cause as much as five to eight pounds in weight gain. This happens because hormones cause the kidneys to fill up with water.
When you retain a lot of fluid, you develop a condition known as edema. One of the places this extreme bloating shows itself is in your legs. When your body is retaining water, it fills up not only the cells but the “interstitial space,” which is composed of the blood vessels and lymph nodes.
When you have extreme bloating, you can press on your skin and see an indentation mark. When this happens the condition is called pitted edema. Edema can be a symptom of many diseases, including those of the kidneys, liver or heart. A blood clot can cause edema as can having varicose veins. If you take steroids for pain, allergies, or another reason, you will most likely develop edema.
Extreme bloating is also caused by diet. For instance, if you eat a lot of foods that contain a high amount of salt, you are apt to experience bloating. This includes items like potato chips, canned and deli meats, or TV dinners. When you eat too much sodium it causes the body to retain water, causing extreme bloating.
The newest move to sugar alcohols to replace sugar in sugar-free foods causes bloating in many people, especially diabetics who have to eat sugar-free foods. Sorbitol, a sugar alcohol, and fructose, an ingredient in high fructose corn syrup, are both hard to digest and can lead to water retention.
If you have extreme bloating over and over again, it means it is a chronic problem and you should see a doctor to be checked out to make sure you do not have a disease which is causing the bloating. If you just have bloating once in a while, based on something you ate, drinking water, oddly enough, can help alleviate the problem.
Often, extreme bloating is relieved simply by a change to a more healthy diet. Eating fresh vegetables and meat will eliminate most all of the sodium content you find in processed foods. Eating fresh foods and drinking plenty of water also helps to clear out your system.
Additional causes of bloating include irritable bowel syndrome, drinking too much alcohol, food allergies, intolerances to gluten, a hernia, lactose intolerance, prescription medications, celiac disease, drinking too much soda, pancreatitis, liver or kidney disease, including others.
If it turns out to be a specific type of food that is causing your extreme bloating, one of the ways to figure out which one is to keep a food diary. If you write down everything you eat, you can look back and see what you ate right before the bloating began.
There are many foods that cause bloating, beginning with all kinds of beans. Foods which cause a lot of gas can cause bloating. So can legumes, such as cabbage or brussel sprouts, cheeses, ice cream, carbonated beverages, and foods which are deep fried.
There are many over-the-counter products you can buy to help you treat bloating. Antacids are not one of them. In fact, they can cause more bloating. You can also try any number of natural or herbal remedies, which are said to work to relieve extreme bloating. These can include green tea, fruit teas, chamomile tea, peppermint, valerian, fenugreek, and ginger.
