The Truth about a Migraine Cure
Tired of the blinding, debilitating pain, many individuals seek the ultimate migraine cure that will relieve the symptoms this type of headache brings. There are numerous claims of so-called cures for migraines, leaving many to wonder if there really could be a means of halting the pain.
Definition of a migraine
A migraine has many different meanings to many different people. The reason for this is that most people have unique triggers that bring on the pain, and that the pain itself can range in intensity and location between individuals. Though the cause of migraine is not clearly understood, the definition is all too familiar to many. Throbbing, concentrated pains that can occur on one or both sides of the head, sometimes accompanied by vision anomalies, nausea and vomiting, are the typical complaints of those who suffer from these headaches. For some individuals, the pain can emerge after a particular scent is detected or a bright light is seen; others are triggered by lack of sleep, stress, foods or alcohol. Most migraines begin when a combination of triggers occur. However, the odd twist to migraines is that the triggers do not also result in migraines; another anomaly is that one individual’s response to triggers can change at each migraine occurrence.
While most people use the term “migraine” to encompass all of these painful headaches, there are actually two different types:
- Classical migraines are those that occur along with a condition called aura. Auras are sensory sensations, and may be visual, tactile, sensual or even mental. Fewer women experience this type of migraine than do men.
- Common migraines differ from classical only in the fact that auras are not experienced.
Both types of headaches can be equally as painful and be accompanied by the other migraine symptoms.
Coping with migraines
There is no known migraine cure. This fact, while disheartening, should not be cause for individuals to despair. Though migraines are unable to be totally eliminated, they are able to be controlled quite successfully in most cases. Using medications that can either halt a migraine while in progress or by preventing migraines from occurring and making certain lifestyle changes are the typical methods used.
Pain medications are administered to control the pain felt with these headaches, either in over the counter drugs or prescription medicine. Prescription drugs for pain are either triptans or ergot derivatives; both of which provide a chemical balance in the brain. Neither drug is recommended for patients who suffer from heart disease or high blood pressure.
It is fully understandable that migraine sufferers would prefer to prevent the onset of symptoms than to simply curb the discomfort. Such drugs as antidepressants, beta blockers, calcium channel blockers and anticonvulsants are extremely helpful in prohibiting the migraines, especially those that are connected to menstrual cycles in women.
Another method of prevention for these pounding headaches is to identify the specific triggers that affect an individual and then avoid them when possible. Keeping a regular sleep schedule, maintaining a healthy diet, getting plenty of exercise, limiting alcohol intake and finding ways to deal with and eliminate stress from your life are all helpful in reducing the possibility of migraines.
Claims for cures
There are a number of treatments that are touted to be the ultimate migraine cure, but it is important to know that these claims are false. Some of these include caffeine, magnesium supplements and vitamin B12. Not all of the treatments are drug or herbal supplements, however; some make the claim that psychic suggestion is the answer. Tread very carefully with any of these so-called “cures”; keeping in mind that they are merely treatments which may not work at all.
Migraines are particularly painful; sometimes even debilitating in nature, so it is naturally that those who suffer from them would seek a cure. Controlling their occurrences through preventative measures will be much more successful in leading a normal, headache free life.
