It only takes a quick peek at a list of sushi nutrition facts to convince one that sushi is one of the most nutritious types of food one can eat. We often think of sushi as merely being a novelty food, or if we haven't tried it, assume it mainly consists of raw fish wrapped in seaweed. A combination we aren't terribly used to.

Some ingredients have been added, including fatty ingredients to make sushi more appealing to Western tastes, unfortunately often making the dishes less healthy in the process.
Nutrition facts? - There's plenty of vitamins in the vegetables, usually fresh, which you'll find in many sushi dishes. Rice, particularly the Japanese variety, is a low calorie food item, which contains trace mounts of several important minerals, especially manganese and magnesium. Avocados are a popular ingredient in many sushi dishes, and avocados are considered by many to be the most nutritious of all the vegetables. It is said that avocados can be fattening, but you aren't apt to eat enough of them in a single sitting to put on any excess weight.
Seafood Nutrition - Seafood is of course rich in nutrition; most seafood being very high in the essential omega fatty acids. In addition seafood is a good source of protein and most seafood is also a good source of minerals. Seaweed is even more nutritious than avocado and seems to combine the nutritional value of vegetables with the nutrition found in shellfish and other seafood.
It can be a little difficult to provide a detailed list of sushi nutritional facts since there are so many different sushi dishes out there. One can get a good idea however by looking at the make up of the popular California sushi roll. This dish includes avocado, crab meat (sometimes imitation, but still nutritious), cucumber, and seaweed.
The Value Of Taurine - One of the reasons why sushi is so high in nutritional value is due to the fact that much of the seafood used is rich in taurine, an amino acid, and an effective agent for lowering blood cholesterol. Even shellfish, usually somewhat high in cholesterol, contain even higher amounts of taurine, offsetting the negative aspects of the cholesterol. Scallops and clams contain extremely high amounts of taurine, especially the horseneck clam or Geoduck.
The next time you are in a sushi bar or purchase some sushi rolls in the supermarket, take careful note of the ingredients. You'll probably find that published sushi nutrition facts are telling the truth, and that sushi rolls are one of the more nutritious foods you can eat.
