Washing Your Face: Quality Over Quantity
Many people assume that if they scrub their faces with vigor and strong soap each day the pimples will wheedle away down to nothing. This is simply not true. While having a clean face is certainly an important step in fighting acne, scrubbing all day long can actually cause more breakouts. Instead, use a mild cleanser in the morning and at night. In addition to this, do not use a bristle brush or harsh loofah to get rid of zit-causing bacteria; stick to a clean washcloth and gentle circular motions.
Humans use their hands all day long. Because of this, germs and bacteria are picked up in huge quantities. That means that every time you scratch your nose, touch your lips, rub your eyes, or even rest your weary head you are transferring these germs and pore-clogging impurities to your face.
This can be handled by training yourself to not touch your face as much during the day—a task more easily said than done. To help prevent germ transference through hand-to-face contact keep your hands clean; wash the regularly throughout the day with antibacterial soap. If you insist on wearing makeup, look for products that do not contain any oil. Be sure to wash it off at the end of the day as well, or you will likely have a fresh crop of unsightly pimples on your face in the morning. Keep in mind that it may take a couple of weeks after switching products before you see a large difference in breakouts.
Pore-clogging makeup is not the only toiletry that can add to your acne. Hair gel and hair spray are also products that are best used sparingly or not at all. When hair spray is misted over the hair, some of it will inevitably land on your face, particularly your forehead. Hairspray mist and gel-laden sweat trails are common causes of acne that stays primarily on the forehead area.
Working up a good sweat in the great outdoors is a fantastic way to help your skin ward off acne breakouts. A good workout will help regulate your hormones and prevent them from going excessively haywire during puberty and early adulthood. Additionally, exercise can improve your overall physical and emotional health as well and is free to do.
In addition to hormone maintenance, exercising causes you to sweat. When you sweat, impurities and bacteria are flushed through your pores, essentially clearing them out and assisting in the prevention of more breakouts. After exercise you need to take a shower though, or the sweat will dry on your skin and can then prevent your pores from breathing, causing additional breakouts.
