A neurologist can diagnose dyslexia and the proper actions can be taken to help the child. They can be helped by a reading specialist that works with dyslexic kids. They can also be given tools to work with so that they can begin to read.
One of the things the reading specialist may do is to let the child listen to an audio book instead of trying to read one. When the tape is being played the child is asked to trace out letters with their fingers to form words, instead of trying to read them. They can start to learn how to recognize words and after they have completed this first step, learning becomes easier. But there are different degrees of dyslexia because some children can catch up with classmates and succeed in school. While others might never be able to read, write or fully understand language.
For people who cannot completely beat dyslexia there are things to make their lives easier. There are programmable spell check devices and audio readers that can help people with this condition. So just because a child or adult will never be able to see specific words or letters correctly, they can still do everything a normal person can, like read the newspaper or a book. There are also words processors available for dyslexic people. Once they type a word in, it will recognize what the person is trying to say and type a message out correctly. This way the dyslexic can also communicate with other people without any confusion or problems.
Just because a child or adult is diagnosed with dyslexia, this does not mean that the person affected cannot have a normal life. Through specialized teaching and new technologies people with dyslexia now can learn how to read, write and communicate efficiently with others.
