5 Low Fat Snacks for Hungry People

If you are the type of person that frequently snacks throughout the day, then making sure you choose low fat snacks can help you keep off those unwanted pounds. Choosing low fat snacks does not mean that you have to sacrifice taste, despite what many people believe. This is especially important if you are trying to lose weight, since people tend to feel deprived and will cheat.

Below is a list of 5 low fat snacks that can help reduce various cravings, be they sweet or salty, throughout your day. Please note that fruits and veggies are always going to be more healthy, but this list was designed to replace unhealthy junk food snacking.

1. Granola Bars

This may sound like cardboard to some people, but for the uninformed, granola bars have come a long way. If you have a sweet tooth or love chocolate, you’ll be happy to know that low-fat granola bars come in flavors that are practically dripping chocolate gooey goodness. Some granola bars are also fortified with up to 35% of your daily fiber. If you are worried about cost, you’ll be happy to know that granola bars (even the sinfully delicious flavors) are available in generic brands and in bulk stores.

2. Pretzels

Pretzels are a naturally low-fat food and do wonders for people that crave salty snacks. If you have a tendency to go for a bag of greasy potato chips, take those out of your pantry and stock up on some pretzels instead. While you won’t find nutrients and vitamins in these snacks, you also won’t be piling on the pounds from saturated fats.

3. Cold Cereal

A bowl of your favorite cold cereal can be a most satisfying snack. While there are certainly tons of unhealthy, sugary cereals on the market, there are also great deals of balanced ones that don’t have much fat in them. When choosing a cereal, be sure to read the nutritional label on the side panel so you know what you will be putting into your system.

Don’t be afraid to look at the children-targeted cereals. Companies have come a long way in reducing sugars and filler calories from their products, and they frequently enhance the cereals with minerals and vitamins now. Do not assume that you need to head straight to the all natural, triple the price side of the cereal aisle to get a good snack.

4. Low Fat Chips and Salsa

For snackers that want a little spice in their system, few things are as satisfying as dunking tortilla chips in some salsa. Unfortunately, tortilla chips are generally fried and full of unhealthy fats. Thankfully, many brands of tortilla chips are now coming out with baked varieties. This drastically lowers the amount of fat in these salty snacks and still rewards you with a satisfying crunch.

5. Popcorn

Aside from the kernels getting stuck between teeth, many people claim that popcorn is the perfect snack. It’s light and fluffy and is the perfect choice for a night time snack on the couch while watching a movie. It’s important to note, however, that this does not mean theater popcorn doused in imitation butter is ever a good snacking choice.

Many varieties of low fat popcorn are available in the store today. Some of these are pre-popped and come in a cornucopia of different flavors. You can also find microwaveable popcorn s you may enjoy it hot. The important thing to remember if popping your own popcorn at home is that you need to air pop it. Don’t pan-pop the corn; the oil adds fat.
